Nevada’s mines have about 200 million ounces of available gold resources and 100 million ounces in estimated reserves, far more than any other U.S. state.
Colorado boasts 20 million ounces of gold resources with approximately 6 million ounces in reserve. Major mining counties here include Summit, San Miguel, and Teller.
Idaho may be known as the Gem State, but it’s also rich in precious metals like gold. The state’s mines have 15 million ounces of gold, with about another 3 million ounces in reserve.
The gold mines in Montana contain 10 million ounces of gold, with another 3 million ounces in reserve. Operations are concentrated in the western part of the state, with Jefferson County alone producing more than 4 million ounces of gold.
Utah’s mines have 6 million ounces of gold available and another 1.5 million ounces in reserve. The state has several significant mining options, primarily centered in Tooele County.
The Peach State has produced over 8 million ounces of gold, and mining still plays a significant role in the Georgia economy.
Haile Gold Mine in South Carolina ranked as the largest gold mine on the East Coast from 1827 to 1912, and it’s reclaimed that title since it reopened in 2007.
Mines in South Dakota have an estimated 6 million ounces of gold and 1 million ounces in reserve. Custer, Pennington, and Lawrence counties lead the way with 90% of the state’s gold production.
