Former MLB All-Star Sentenced To More Than 6 Years In Jail

Former Major League Baseball All-Star Raul Mondesi was sentenced to six years and nine months in jail Friday, according to multiple reports, but won't serve a day behind bars.

According to the Associated Press, Mondesi made a deal with prosecutors in the Dominican Republic, who agreed the 53-year-old had served his sentence of more than six years under house arrest, effectively freeing him.

Mondesi was elected mayor of San Cristobal, his hometown in the Dominican Republic in 2010. However, in 2017, he was sentenced to eight years in prison for corruption, including embezzling more than $6 million in public funds, during his time as mayor.

He had been under house arrest since. The 1994 National League Rookie of the Year, Mondesi starred for the Los Angeles Dodgers for six years following his 1993 debut.

He hit .288 with 163 home runs and 518 RBIs in Los Angeles, before angrily demanding a trade and being dealt to the Toronto Blue Jays in 1999.

"He's a hero in our country, a genuine hero," Dodgers shortstop and countryman Jose Offerman said in 1995. "We've had a lot of players come through the Dominican .

Mondesi finished his 13-year career in 2005 following stints with the Dodgers, Blue Jays, New York Yankees, Arizona Diamondbacks, Pittsburgh Pirates, Anaheim Angels, and Atlanta Braves.

He retired with a lifetime batting average of .273, 271 homers, 860 RBIs, two Gold Glove awards, and an All-Star Game appearance in 1995. The rags-to-riches story fueled an unlikely victory in his bid for mayor of San Cristobal.
